How to Boost Your Self-Care Routine with Fresh Flowers

“Why do you look so relaxed?” my colleague asked on a Zoom call.

“Oh, I was just trimming my peonies and snapdragons,” I told her.

But before I had a chance to explain more, the rest of our team joined the call and the meeting began. Which is really too bad because in the unofficial capital of self-care—Los Angeles—where you can find about a thousand ways to be cleansed, blessed, and de-stressed, I had discovered a new self-care ritual: fresh flower delivery.

I should first point out that I’m also the kind of person who winces at the extra charge for guac and brings my own candy to the movie theater so when it comes to buying flowers I need them to be a great value that last! The secret to my newfound floral ways is Freddie’s Flowers, a subscription service that delivers a box of fresh blooms to my door each week. And yes, it’s affordable and flexible because you can use the online calendar to get deliveries whenever you want!

What started as a treat for myself and my apartment, has become so much more. Arranging each bunch has become my weekly moment of Zen and my favorite self-care ritual.

Flower Arranging: The Ultimate De-Stresser

My Freddie’s Flowers arrive at my door each Thursday, which is just the pick-me-up I need to get me through the day and through to the weekend. Right as I start to wonder if somebody’s swapped my coffee for decaf, I hear a knock at the door and bound downstairs to intercept my bundle of blooms. Freddie (yes, he’s a real florist based in London!) picks a theme each week and provides an illustrated guide along with the loose stems so you can craft your arrangement yourself.

I usually spend about 15 glorious minutes poring over the guide, trimming my stems, and arranging to my heart’s content. It’s the perfect break from my computer and the ideal meditative moment to hit pause on the morning’s craziness at work. I then return to my desk feeling refreshed, which (as mentioned above) even my colleagues have noticed.

The True Power of Flowers

All my hydrangea and hyacinth-induced happiness made me wonder, was I imagining this floral glee? Or was it real? So I went searching for answers (i.e. I called on my good friend Google) and found some interesting research. A 2005 study called “An Environmental Approach to Positive Emotion: Flowers,” conducted by multiple psychology professors and emotion and sensory experience researchers, found scientific proof that flowers inspire joy. In the study, both men and women were given gifts in an elevator (either a pen or a Gerbera daisy) and results found that the daisy inspired more positive social behavior. The researchers suggest that though flowers have no obvious reward (they’re not a food source, for example), the reason humans have cultivated them for thousands of years is because they quickly induce positive emotions. Yes, flower power is scientifically proven.

Look Ma, I’m a Florist!

Beyond the joy of just looking at beautiful blooms, Freddie’s Flowers also inspires my creative side. With grocery store stems, you typically just throw them in a vase. But with my Freddie’s deliveries I get to create the arrangements. It’s an artful moment I can count on each week. Plus, the guides come packed with information about the flower varieties and even historical tidbits here and there. I’m a budding florist, if I do say so myself.

My Apartment Has Never Felt Fresher

People often talk about how physical clutter can affect your mental wellbeing in a space. An uncluttered home can promote an uncluttered mind. Well, I’d take that a step further and say that a home filled with joyful blooms has helped me feel more joy, too. Not only do I get a mood boost when I’m arranging my Freddie’s Flowers, I also feel a jolt of delight each time I pass them in my entryway or bedroom.

So, step aside sound bath practitioners, tarot readers, and crystal healers. There’s a hot new self-care ritual in town and Freddie’s Flowers is it!
