Harry’s – An Honest Review

Until 6 months ago the reason I hadn’t graduated from plastic razors was sheer laziness. Yes, they are cheap, yes they are convenient but they are also pretty useless. After my girlfriend cleared out our bathroom and uncovered tons of items I’ve had piled up in a drawer for years (mostly random Christmas presents from great Aunt Evelyn) I decided it was time to take action. First things first, the dreaded plastic razor. After accusing my girlfriend of hoarding and taking up the majority of our bathroom storage, it turns out I had 3 half filled bags of these stuffed at the bottom of a basket (plus a couple by the sink, plus a couple of rusty ones in the shower). Now I am certainly no climate warrior but seeing tens of these flimsy bright orange sticks did result in a pang of guilt. I recalled seeing an article about plastic razors being ‘the new plastic straws’ and thought, as I am no longer a 15-year-old boy there’s no excuse really.

The first thing that came to mind was Harry’s. Not shy when it comes to advertising themselves, I had seen these guys everywhere on social media and each morning as I rode the tube to work. A subscription seemed like far too much hassle but seeing the sight of the miscellaneous pile of bathroom products I had accumulated gave me the push to give them a try. 6 months later and I wonder why on earth it took me so long. Since signing up to Harry’s I have not looked back and I will tell you why.

I initially thought I would be tied into a subscription that would be impossible to escape (like sitting next to great Aunt Evelyn at Sunday lunch) but I was wrong. You can purchase Harry’s products one-off as a trial or even to buy as presents/extras. I ended up going for the trial set to start me off before committing which included one five-blade razor, a shaving gel and a travel blade cover. Delivery was £3.95 and the nifty set arrived a couple of days later in some seriously stylish packaging.

The quality is a game changer. I hadn’t realised what I was missing all these years! As soon as I held the weight of the razor in my hand I embarrassingly felt like I had truly graduated into manhood. The handle is made from rubber (I chose orange) which makes it seriously comfortable to hold and manoeuvre. It has a great weight to it which simply bears no comparison to the flimsy pieces of plastic I had been using for years (hangs head in shame). I expected attaching the blade to be awkward but it couldn’t be more simple. The razor blade is connected with one simple push and to remove the cartridge, you grip on either side below the razor head to push it off. The blades are made in Harry’s own German factory. With five-blades you are guaranteed a clean and sharp shave use after use, making shaving something I now enjoy. The satisfaction of gliding this ergonomic razor around my face hasn’t yet disappeared. Long gone are the days of nicks, cuts, rashes and missed patches.

So what’s the cost? At the moment the trial kit I started with (one handle of your choice, one blade, a shaving gel and travel cover) usually worth £11.50 is completely free! Given the current cost of living rises, it was important to me to have something affordable and so the initial offer was most welcome as it allowed me to try the product before committing to it.

Thereafter, depending on how often you shave, you can arrange for ongoing refills to be delivered at your convenience. When you are ready to refill or replace your cartridges you can get a set of eight blades for £14, which makes the cost per blade just £1.75. In my case, I shave every 2-4 days so my refills come every 3 months but again, this can be changed or cancelled at any time. I use the orange Truman razor handle (£8) which I love but there is also the option for an even more luxurious handle. The Winston handle (£18) has a polished chrome finish and it can be engraved with your initials. I haven’t quite graduated to the Winston level yet but maybe one day! Regardless of your option, it’s much more cost efficient than I thought it was going to be given the premium nature of the brand – something I’m definitely grateful for as prices have hiked everywhere else in my life!

Originally I was too lazy to make the move to a subscription service like this as I thought it would be too much hassle. In reality, it is far more convenient and cost-effective than I ever expected. Now, I don’t even have to think about what I need as Harry’s send me my cartridges every 3 months just as I’m running out. If I need extra shaving gel I can just login and add it to my order. Since this life-changing discovery (dramatic, but true) I have converted so many friends and family to Harry’s with 100% success rate. I am confident that anyone who makes the effort to try Harry’s, like me, will not go back!
