
SPF Moisturiser vs Sunscreen: The 17% of Your Face Going Unprotected in Summer 2026
Put someone under a UV camera after they’ve applied their morning SPF moisturiser and the result is unsettling: on average, 17% of their face is completely bare. That’s not a guess. Researchers at the University of Liverpool photographed 84 people under UV light after they’d applied either a standard SPF30 sunscreen or an SPF30 moisturiser, and the moisturiser group missed nearly a fifth of their face – without realising they’d missed anything at all. And with Cancer Research UK confirming in May that melanoma cases have hit a record high, the summer of 2026 is a bad year to be relying on your day cream.

I’ve spent five years in clinic and another chunk of my career testing facial SPFs at home, and the pattern never changes. People believe they’re protected because a label says SPF30. The label isn’t lying, exactly. But the way we use these products bears no resemblance to the way they’re tested.
SPF moisturiser vs sunscreen: what the UV camera actually showed
The Liverpool study, published in PLOS ONE in 2019, remains the best real-world comparison we have. Over two visits, 84 people aged 18 to 57 applied SPF30 sunscreen on one occasion and an SPF30 moisturiser on the other. A modified camera then showed exactly where the product had landed.
With sunscreen, people missed 11% of their face on average. With moisturiser, 17%. The gap got worse in the one place it matters most: the eyelids, where moisturiser users missed 21% of the skin. Eyelid skin is thin, it’s a known site for skin cancers, and it’s precisely the area people instinctively avoid when rubbing in a face cream because nobody wants moisturiser in their eye.
The researchers’ conclusion was blunt – moisturiser application is inferior, and users shouldn’t consider it equivalent protection. And participants didn’t know they’d done a worse job. Asked afterwards, most were confident they’d covered everything.
Two products, same number on the tin, measurably different outcomes. That’s the whole story of SPF moisturisers in one experiment.

The teaspoon problem
Coverage is only half the issue. The other half is dose, and dose is what almost everyone gets wrong, whichever product they use.
SPF ratings are measured in a lab at 2 milligrams of product per square centimetre of skin. For your face and neck, that works out at roughly half a teaspoon – a genuinely startling amount when you actually measure it out. Most of us apply somewhere between a quarter and a half of that, and protection doesn’t scale down politely. Apply half the tested amount and you don’t get half the protection; you get dramatically less. An SPF30 used the way most people use it delivers something closer to a 10, sometimes lower. I once measured out half a teaspoon of sunscreen onto the back of my hand for a sceptical client; she stared at it and said she’d been making that amount last a week.
Now think about how a moisturiser is used. A pea-sized blob, massaged in until it disappears, because that’s what moisturiser is for. The product is designed to feel like it was never there. Sunscreen, for all its faults, at least announces itself – you can feel the layer, which nudges you towards applying enough of it.
NHS guidance is clear on the numbers: at least SPF30, applied generously, topped up at least every two hours, and reapplied after swimming or sweating. Nobody is reapplying their day cream at lunchtime. It sits under makeup, applied once at 7.30am, and it’s expected to see you through to the evening. By mid-afternoon on a June day, whatever protection it offered has largely gone.
UVA: the number on the front tells you nothing about it
The SPF number only measures protection against UVB – the rays that burn. UVA is the sneakier band: it penetrates deeper, drives most photoageing, passes through window glass, and contributes to skin cancer risk. It’s also the part of the spectrum where SPF moisturisers are most likely to cut corners.
In the UK, decent UVA protection is signalled by a circled “UVA” logo or a star rating, ideally 4 or 5 stars. Dedicated sunscreens almost always carry one. Flip over the moisturisers on your shelf and you’ll find plenty that don’t – the SPF15 or SPF20 on the front is a UVB figure with little behind it. The anti-ageing irony writes itself: a cream marketed at £38 to reduce fine lines, missing solid protection against the main environmental cause of fine lines.
And UVA doesn’t take winter off, which is the one argument in the moisturiser’s favour – more on that below.
How to read the label in ten seconds
Sun protection labelling rewards the suspicious, so here’s the short version of what I check on any bottle, cream or spray before it goes near my face.
The big SPF number covers UVB only. For UVA you want the letters “UVA” in a circle – the EU standard meaning UVA protection is at least a third of the stated SPF – or, on UK high street brands, a star rating of 4 or 5. No circle, no stars, no purchase. Then the small open-jar symbol with a number like “12M”: that’s months of shelf life after opening, and the bottle from the 2023 holiday to Corfu is past it. Expired sunscreen doesn’t just fade politely; the filters degrade unevenly, so you can’t know what you’re getting.
Be wary of “once-a-day” formulas too. Which? tested these claims back in 2016 and found protection could fall by as much as 74% over the course of a day of normal wear – sweat, towels and clothing all take their share. The convenience is real, but treat the claim as a marketing ambition rather than a promise, and top up anyway.
“Water resistant” deserves the same scepticism. Under the standard test, a sunscreen can lose up to half its SPF after two twenty-minute swims and still earn the label. After a proper session in the sea or the pool, reapply. Always.

Where the moisturiser defence holds up
Let me be fair to the humble SPF day cream, because the answer here isn’t “bin it”.
For a November commute – twenty minutes of weak, low-angle UV on the way to the office – an SPF moisturiser with a proper UVA logo is perfectly reasonable protection, and it’s a lot better than the nothing most people wore before these products existed. Incidental winter exposure is exactly the job it was built for. The problem is scope creep: a product designed for grey Tuesdays in Croydon being trusted on a 31-degree July afternoon, at a lido, at a barbecue, at the school sports day that ran three hours longer than advertised.
Here’s my contrarian bit, and it cuts the other way too: most dedicated “facial sunscreens” at the premium end are also a swindle. The £28 invisible-veil fluids and cashmere-finish shields are, functionally, the same filters you’ll find in a £6 supermarket bottle wearing nicer packaging and a silicone primer texture. You’re paying for feel, not protection. Feel matters – a sunscreen you hate wearing is a sunscreen you won’t wear – but nobody should believe the protection itself is five times better because the price is.
One more structural difference that rarely gets mentioned: moisturisers aren’t formulated or tested for water resistance, because staying put through sweat was never in the brief. On a hot day the humectants that make a day cream feel lovely – glycerin, hyaluronic acid – are also what let it migrate and break up as your skin warms. Sunscreens are built as a film. Day creams are built to sink in. In a heatwave, that difference stops being cosmetic.
If your SPF moisturiser has a high factor, a 4-star UVA rating and you slather it on like sunscreen, you’ve bought a sunscreen with better marketing, near enough. Almost nobody does that. The format changes how much you use, and how much you use decides how protected you are.
The foundation fig leaf
A quick word on SPF in makeup, because it’s the same problem taken to its logical extreme.
To get the SPF15 printed on a foundation bottle, you’d need to apply roughly seven times more foundation than anyone actually wears. The amounts involved in a normal application give you an SPF of almost nothing. It’s not a con exactly – the claim is technically true at lab quantities – but as sun protection it’s a fig leaf. Treat the SPF in your foundation, BB cream or setting spray as a bonus layer over real protection, never as the protection itself.
The reverse layering question comes up constantly in clinic: sunscreen goes on after skincare and before makeup, given a few minutes to settle. If reapplying over a full face at 2pm is unrealistic, an SPF50 mist or powder is an imperfect but workable top-up. Imperfect beats absent.

Record melanoma numbers, record temperatures
The stakes shifted this year. Cancer Research UK announced in May that melanoma cases have hit a record high, with more than 20,000 people a year now diagnosed in the UK. Almost 9 in 10 of those cases are caused by too much UV – which makes melanoma one of the most preventable common cancers we have. The charity’s long-standing warning bears repeating in a summer like this one: getting sunburnt just once every two years can triple your risk of melanoma. Once every two years. That’s a single overrun pub garden afternoon without protection, repeated across a decade.
Faces, ears and necks carry a heavy share of that risk, for the obvious reason that they’re the bits exposed every single day rather than two weeks a year.
Set that against the summer Britain is actually having. It’s also not just a beach thing. Driving with the window down, working from the garden, the daily dog walk, forty lengths at one of the country’s newly rammed lidos – UK summer UV is entirely capable of doing damage through everyday exposure, and the eyelid finding from Liverpool should worry anyone who spends August squinting at a laptop in the garden.
What I’d actually do this summer
My own routine, for what it’s worth: a plain moisturiser, then a separate SPF50 facial sunscreen every morning from April to October – the half-teaspoon dose, eyelids included, ears included. The brand rotates; the current one is a £7 supermarket own-label that does the job as well as anything I used on Harley Street. On heavy sun days it gets topped up at lunch. My SPF moisturiser still exists, and it comes out roughly November to February.
If you take four things from this piece, make them these: a separate sunscreen for summer, SPF30 minimum with a 4-star UVA rating; enough of it, which is more than feels natural; reapplication on any day you’re properly outdoors; and no outsourcing the job to moisturiser or makeup between May and September. None of this requires spending more than about £8, whatever the beauty halls suggest.
