
Why British Homes Turn Into Greenhouses Every Heatwave – And What Actually Keeps A House Cool In 2026
Some time around the middle of next week, if the current forecasts hold, parts of England will brush 31C. Forecasters are pointing to a sharp warm spike around 17 and 18 June, with the strongest heat over London, East Anglia and the South East. And in millions of British homes, the same ritual will play out: every window flung open at midday, a £30 fan dragged out of the cupboard to push warm air around a warm room, and a sleepless night spent on top of the duvet wondering why the bedroom is still 28C at 1am. If you want to keep your house cool in a heatwave, almost everything British instinct tells you to do is wrong, and the things that work are mostly cheap, unglamorous and need doing before the heat arrives, not during it.

The frustrating part is that none of this is a mystery. Building scientists have understood for decades why UK homes cook in summer. A University of East London study found that 80 per cent of UK homes overheat in summer, with more than a third of households reporting daily overheating and over half losing sleep to it. This is not a freak weather problem. It is a housing stock problem, and you can work around it.
Your house is doing exactly what it was designed to do
British homes are heat traps by design. For a century and a half we have built almost exclusively for one problem – cold winters – and the solutions are all one-directional. Thick masonry, small openings, draught-proofing, and more recently deep loft insulation and double glazing. All of it is engineered to hold heat in. None of it cares which direction the heat came from.
That is why the UK pattern in a heatwave is so distinctive. Researchers have found that in 30C conditions the temperature inside a typical UK home can climb by around five degrees in just three hours, roughly twice the rate seen in parts of mainland Europe, where shutters, shading and thermally massive construction are standard. Once that heat is inside a well-insulated British house, it stays. Counter-intuitively, the most energy-efficient homes can be among the worst affected: highly rated EPC A and B properties have been found to be roughly twice as likely to overheat when ventilation is inadequate, because the same fabric that keeps February’s warmth in does the same job with June’s.
New-build flats are the sharpest end of this. Large south or west-facing glazing, restricted window openings for safety, and single-aspect layouts that make cross-ventilation impossible. If you live in one, the passive advice below matters twice as much, because you have the least margin for error.

The battle is won at the glass, not in the room
Most summer heat enters a British home through its windows, as solar gain. Sunlight passes through the glass, hits your floor and furniture, and is re-radiated as heat that the glazing then traps. This is the greenhouse effect operating in your living room, and it is why the single most effective thing you can do costs nothing: stop the sun reaching the glass in the first place.
The hierarchy here is blunt. External shading – shutters, awnings, even a temporary sun shield rigged outside the window – beats anything fitted inside, because it intercepts heat before it enters. Researchers at Loughborough University have argued that simple external sun shields could be key to keeping UK homes liveable in heatwaves, and it is how most of southern Europe has managed for generations. Internal options still help, but colour matters more than people think: a white or reflective blind bounces solar energy back out, while heavy dark curtains absorb it and quietly become radiators. The official GOV.UK Beat the Heat checklist makes the same point, and adds the improvised version: a plain sheet hung over a sun-facing window does a respectable impression of a proper blind.
Timing is the other half. Shade the east-facing glass before you leave for work, the south and west-facing glass from late morning. By the time a room feels hot, the heat is already banked.

The cheapest way to keep a house cool in a heatwave starts the night before
The technique with the best effort-to-result ratio of all is night purging, and almost nobody in Britain does it deliberately. On hot days the outside air is usually cooler than your house from late evening until around 8am. That window is your only free cooling of the day. Open windows on opposite sides of the home to create a cross-breeze, open internal doors, and if you have two storeys, open upstairs and downstairs together so warm air can exhaust high while cooler air is drawn in low. Window restrictors or security stays solve the obvious objection, letting you ventilate overnight without leaving the house wide open.
Then – and this is the part that feels wrong – shut everything by mid-morning. Windows closed, blinds down, house sealed like a thermos of cool air. Opening windows at 2pm on a 31C day does not let heat out; it lets heat in. The continental habit of the shuttered, dim afternoon house is not a quirk. It is the correct answer arrived at by people who have been doing this longer than we have.
What fans can and cannot do (and which ones earn their keep)
Here is the sentence every fan marketing department would rather you did not read: fans do not cool rooms. They cool people, by moving air across your skin and speeding up evaporation. A fan oscillating away in an empty room is just a small electric heater with good PR. That distinction tells you how to use one well – pointed at you, not at the middle of the room – and it explains the one exception: during the overnight purge, a fan in a window blowing hot air out, or pulling cool air in, genuinely shifts the room temperature rather than just the feel of it.
On hardware, the gap between a £25 supermarket fan and the good stuff is real but specific. The MeacoFan 1056P, around £150, is the quiet operator’s choice: it is an air circulator rather than a blaster, certified down to a near-silent hum on low settings, which matters enormously at 3am when a cheap fan’s rattle is the thing keeping you awake. The Shark FlexBreeze FA220UK, typically £150 to £200, took TechRadar’s top fan recommendation on flexibility: it runs corded or cordless, converts from pedestal to tabletop, works outdoors, and has a misting attachment that borders on gimmick until the garden hits 30C, at which point it becomes the best £20-equivalent feature you own. The honest negative: premium bladeless towers cost three to four times as much as either and move less air per pound than both. They are lovely objects. They are not better fans.
And the viral bowl-of-ice-in-front-of-the-fan trick? Marginal. It cools the air slightly for a few minutes over a small area, then leaves you with a bowl of warm water and extra humidity. Skip it.

Portable air conditioning: the only real cooling, with real catches
If you need a room to actually be colder – a baby’s bedroom, a loft office, anyone vulnerable to heat – a portable air conditioner is the only plug-in product that does it. Everything else manages comfort; this manages temperature. But go in with eyes open, because the catches are substantial.
First, the exhaust hose is not optional. A portable AC works by dumping heat out of the window through that fat plastic duct, and the gap around the hose lets hot air straight back in unless you fit a window seal kit, which costs £15 to £25 and roughly doubles the unit’s effectiveness. Second, the running cost is honest money: most units draw 1 to 1.3kW, which at current electricity prices works out at roughly 25 to 35p an hour. An eight-hour night, every night of a two-week hot spell, adds up to £30 or more. Third, they are loud – typically 50 to 65 decibels, which is conversation volume in the room you are trying to sleep in.
The realistic advice: for most healthy adults in most British summers, a £150 fan plus disciplined shading and night purging gets you 90 per cent of the way for 5 per cent of the running cost, and you should skip the AC. If you do buy one, size it properly – roughly 9,000 BTU for a typical double bedroom – run it with the door closed, and treat the window seal kit as part of the purchase price, not an accessory.

Why you still cannot sleep at 26C
Even a well-managed house will sit in the mid-20s overnight during a proper hot spell, and British sleep falls apart well before British thermometers do. Part of that is humidity: UK heat is rarely dry heat, and at 70 per cent humidity your body’s evaporative cooling – sweating – barely works, which is why 26C in Manchester can feel worse than 32C in Madrid. A fan helps precisely because it restores that evaporation. It is also why the classic advice about cold showers needs a tweak: a lukewarm shower before bed cools you more effectively than an icy one, because freezing water makes your body clamp its blood vessels shut and retain heat. The bedding matters more than the gadgetry. Cotton or linen sheets, a 4.5 tog or no duvet, and nothing synthetic against your skin. Fill a hot water bottle and freeze it for an hour before bed. And if one room of the house stays coolest – often a north-facing room downstairs – sleep there for the week and stop fighting the physics of a south-facing bedroom under a warm loft.
The heat you are generating yourself
On a 31C day, your house is also being heated from the inside, and this is the most overlooked fix of all. An oven run at 200C for an hour dumps a remarkable amount of heat into a sealed kitchen and keeps radiating long after it pings. Hot-weather cooking wants to happen outside or not at all, which is half the reason the electric BBQ has quietly taken over British balconies and small gardens this year. The dishwasher and tumble dryer are the same story on a smaller scale: run them in the overnight purge window, not at 4pm.
Electronics count too. Your pre-heatwave checklist for next week
Between now and the middle of next week, the order of operations looks like this. This weekend, sort your shading: identify which windows face east, south and west, and make sure each one has something reflective or at least pale to cover it, even if that is a sheet and some pegs. Fit window restrictors if overnight security is what stops you ventilating. Test the fan you own before the night you need it, and if it failed you last summer, the £150 tier is the sweet spot and sells out fast in hot weeks – Britain buys its entire summer’s fan stock in roughly four panicked days.
From Tuesday: windows and blinds shut by 9am, house sealed through the afternoon, everything opened up after 9pm, fans running in windows overnight. Cook outside or cold. Appliances after dark. Bedroom door open, fan pointed at the bed, not the wall. It is a routine, and like most routines it feels like faff for the first two days and then becomes automatic – and your house will be five degrees cooler than your neighbour’s by Thursday afternoon.
