Electrolyte Powders UK 2026: Who Actually Needs Them – And Who Is Paying £1 A Serving To Replace A Pinch Of Salt

Have a look inside any UK gym bag this month and you will probably find them: slim foil sachets of flavoured powder, promising better hydration, sharper focus and fewer headaches for somewhere between 70p and £1.50 a go. Electrolyte powders UK sales have climbed steadily since the pandemic-era running boom, and in 2026 the category has properly escaped the sports nutrition aisle. Sachets now sit at coffee shop tills, in office desk drawers and on the counters of people whose most strenuous daily activity is a brisk walk to the station. Which raises an awkward question the marketing never quite answers: most Britons already eat 40 per cent more salt than the NHS recommends, so why are we paying a premium to stir more of it into our water?

The honest answer is that electrolyte powders are a brilliant product for a fairly small group of people and an expensive ritual for everyone else. This piece is about working out which group you are in – because the difference is worth a few hundred pounds a year.

How a sports-science niche became a high-street habit

Electrolyte supplementation used to be the preserve of marathoners and people with a stomach bug. The chemistry has not changed since then, but the branding has. American import LMNT – beloved of podcasters and the low-carb crowd – packs a hefty 1,000mg of sodium, 200mg of potassium and 60mg of magnesium into each stick, and has been testing UK distribution. Home-grown Humantra sells 20 plant-based sachets for £28 and positions itself as everyday hydration rather than sports fuel. Add the pastel-coloured options stacked by supermarket checkouts and you have a category that has quietly repositioned salt water as self-care.

The trend mechanics are familiar. Like creatine before it, electrolytes have ridden the wave of wellness influencers turning legitimate sports science into a daily habit for the general population. The difference is that creatine has robust evidence for everyday users. Daily electrolyte supplementation, for most people eating a normal British diet, does not.

What electrolytes actually do – the 60-second version

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in fluid: chiefly sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. They regulate how water moves between your blood, your cells and the space in between. Sodium is the headline act because it is the main electrolyte you lose in sweat, and because fluid follows sodium – drink salted water and you retain more of it, rather than simply filtering it through your kidneys and into the nearest toilet.

That last mechanism is the kernel of truth in the marketing. Plain water is absorbed better with a little sodium and glucose alongside it, which is why oral rehydration salts exist for treating illness. The leap the adverts make – and the one worth interrogating – is from “sodium helps fluid absorption when you are depleted” to “you, a healthy person with a kettle and a fridge, are depleted”.

The salt problem nobody mentions

Here is the figure that should sit alongside every electrolyte advert: the average UK adult eats 8.4g of salt a day, against a recommended maximum of 6g, according to national diet survey data cited by Action on Salt. That 8.4g of salt contains roughly 3.4g of sodium – well over three times what a typical hour of moderate exercise will cost you in sweat.

In other words, the standard British diet of bread, cereal, cheese and the occasional ready meal is already an electrolyte supplement. Sodium deficiency caused by diet is genuinely rare in the UK. Potassium is the mineral Britons are more likely to fall short on – and most powders contain a token amount of it, because meaningful doses taste dreadful. If you want more potassium, a banana and a jacket potato will outperform a sachet at a fraction of the price.

The NHS guidance on hydration is almost boring in its simplicity: six to eight cups of fluid a day, more in hot weather or when active, and aim for pee that is a clear pale yellow. Tea and coffee count. There is no asterisk directing you to a subscription service.

Who actually needs electrolyte powders in the UK

None of this means the products are useless. There are five groups for whom electrolyte powders in the UK make defensible, sometimes excellent, sense.

Long-session endurance people. If you run, ride or row hard for more than about 60 to 90 minutes – especially in warm weather – you are in the territory where sweat sodium losses start to matter and where drinking large volumes of plain water can dilute your blood sodium. The UK runners currently chasing their VO2 max numbers with long Sunday efforts are the textbook customer.

Heavy, salty sweaters. Some people finish a session with white crusts on their kit and stinging eyes. That is not imagination; sweat composition varies enormously between individuals (more on which below), and the saltiest sweaters lose several times more sodium per litre than the most dilute.

The heat-exposed. Hot yoga regulars, tradespeople working through warm spells, and the converts to Britain’s beach-hut sauna boom all sweat far more than the average gym-goer. With the Met Office expecting above-average temperatures for much of the UK in the coming weeks, this group grows every summer.

Anyone genuinely depleted by illness. Vomiting and diarrhoea strip fluid and electrolytes fast, which is exactly what pharmacy oral rehydration salts such as Dioralyte are formulated for – at a markedly lower price than lifestyle brands.

Low-carb and very low-calorie dieters. Cutting carbohydrate hard makes the kidneys excrete more sodium, which is why keto forums talk endlessly about headaches and “keto flu”. This is the one everyday population where the high-sodium American formulas have a coherent rationale.

If you do not recognise yourself in that list – if your exercise is a 45-minute gym class and your week’s biggest sweat is a stressful meeting – a daily sachet is doing little your breakfast did not already do.

Your sweat is not my sweat: what the science actually shows

The most interesting research in this area is about variability. A widely cited review of sweat testing in athletes, published in Sports Medicine, found that sweat sodium concentration ranges from roughly 10 to 90 mmol per litre between individuals – in plain terms, from about a quarter of a gram to over two grams of salt per litre of sweat. Sweat rate itself varies just as widely, influenced by fitness, heat acclimatisation, genetics, body size and exercise intensity.

This is why blanket advice fails in both directions. A salty-sweating club runner doing a two-hour long run in July genuinely might need a gram of sodium during and after; an office worker doing a lunchtime spin class genuinely might need nothing. The product category treats everyone like the first person. Physiology says most of us are the second.

It also explains the placebo-adjacent appeal. Electrolyte drinks taste pleasant, encourage you to drink more overall, and the act of mixing one feels like doing something for your health. If a sachet gets you drinking when you otherwise would not, it is not worthless – but a squeeze of squash achieves the same behavioural nudge for pennies.

There is one more reason the long-session group should take this seriously, and it is the opposite of the one the adverts lean on. The documented danger at marathons and long charity events is not usually dehydration but overhydration: runners who dutifully drink large volumes of plain water at every station can dilute their blood sodium to the point of exercise-associated hyponatraemia, which in severe cases is a medical emergency. It tends to affect slower participants who are out on the course longest and drinking most. For that group, some sodium in the bottle is not a lifestyle flourish – it is sensible risk management, alongside the more important rule of drinking to thirst rather than to a schedule.

The UK market: powders, tablets and the chemist’s own shelf

British buyers actually have three tiers to choose from, and the newest is the most expensive by some distance.

At the top sit the lifestyle powders – Humantra at roughly £1.40 a sachet, LMNT at a similar rate when it can be had here, and a growing field of UK challengers with similar pricing and prettier packaging. You are paying for high (or in some cases conspicuously low) sodium, added magnesium, natural flavouring and brand.

Below them sits the unglamorous middle tier that British endurance sport has used for years: effervescent electrolyte tablets from the likes of SiS, High5 and Zero-style ranges, typically working out at 25p to 40p per serving. Sodium per tablet is usually in the 250mg to 350mg range – less than the strongest powders, but adequate for most long sessions, and a fraction of the cost. If you are a runner or cyclist rather than a wellness subscriber, this tier is where the value lives, and it is telling how rarely it features in 2026’s hydration discourse.

At the bottom, in the best possible sense, is the pharmacy shelf: oral rehydration salts formulated to clinical standards for actual fluid loss from illness, at supermarket own-brand prices. Nobody posts them on Instagram. They work.

If you are buying anyway: read the sodium line first

Assuming you are in one of the five groups above, ignore the branding and read two numbers: sodium per serving and price per serving.

Sodium content varies by an order of magnitude across the category. The strongest formulas carry around 1,000mg per serving; many pretty, fruit-flavoured options contain less than 100mg, which is hydration theatre – you would get more sodium from a slice of bread. For long, hot sessions, something in the 300mg to 1,000mg range is the evidence-aligned zone. For illness, stick to proper oral rehydration salts, which are formulated to a clinical standard.

On price, the arithmetic is stark. Premium sachets work out at £1 to £1.50 each, or comfortably over £400 a year as a daily habit. A 750g tub of supermarket sea salt costs about £1.50 and contains roughly 1,500 doses of the active ingredient that does most of the work. The £400 question is whether the magnesium top-up, the flavour and the ritual are worth the gap.

One caveat that deserves more prominence than the marketing gives it: if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart failure, or you take medication that affects sodium or potassium balance, a high-sodium daily drink is a conversation to have with your GP, not an impulse buy. Britain’s cardiovascular problem is too much sodium, not too little.

The two-minute home alternative

For training sessions over an hour, sports dietitians have recommended a homemade version for decades: 500ml of water, a generous pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon gives you roughly 575mg of sodium), and a splash of squash or fruit juice for flavour and a little glucose to help absorption. Total cost: low single-digit pennies. It will not photograph as well as a pastel sachet, and the magnesium and potassium numbers will be lower, but for sodium and fluid replacement – the parts that matter mid-exercise – it does the job.

That is the pattern with much of 2026’s supplement landscape, from glutathione skin supplements to half the longevity stack: a real mechanism, a real beneficiary group, and a price that only makes sense if you ignore the kitchen-cupboard alternative. Electrolytes are arguably the clearest case of all, because the active ingredient is table salt.

Verdict: a tool, not a habit

Electrolyte powders are neither scam nor essential. They are a convenience product that solves a real problem for endurance athletes, heavy sweaters, sauna regulars, the unwell and the very low-carb – and an expensive way to flavour water for everyone else. The UK’s wellness crowd, increasingly thoughtful about what it drinks this summer, deserves the same honesty about what it stirs into its water bottle.

If you train long, sweat salty or spend your summer in a sauna, buy a high-sodium formula and use it when it counts. If not, the NHS’s pale-yellow-pee rule and your normal diet have you covered, and the £28 is better spent on decent running socks.

So here is the test worth running before your next subscription renewal: skip the sachet for a fortnight of normal training, keep an eye on how you actually feel, and see whether you were buying physiology or ritual. Which one was it?
