If you would have told me a year ago that I would be writing and publishing an article about my hair loss I wouldn’t have believed you for a second. Up until recently I have avoided drawing attention to my hair at all costs – even as I write this, some of those feelings return – the anxiety, insecurity and complete lack of confidence. I used to be desperate for it to be winter so I could get away with keeping my beanie hat on and in summer a sports cap would usually be glued to my head. I used to dread smart occasions where I would be forced to expose my patchy head and sometimes even came up with excuses to not go, because I felt so insecure. Many of my friends would even point my thinning hair out and laugh, I laughed along too but inside I wanted the ground to swallow me up. This might sound completely ridiculous to many of you, it might sound pathetic and vain, but I know there are men like me going through this too and that’s why I want to share my story.

I’m Alex, I’m thirty-two and I have suffered with hair loss for about eight years. Firstly, I want to say that I’m sorry if you are reading this and going through what I went through. In my experience, men are ‘supposed to be macho,’ secure, modest and insensitive. Women appear to be much more open about their insecurities and finding resolutions but for some reason it’s different with men. As a result of these societal expectations, I experienced a lot of shame about my hair loss, not only because my head was going bald but because it hugely impacted my overall well-being and self-esteem. I was ashamed that I felt so ashamed!

Just over a year ago I decided enough is enough, I finally accepted that my hair was really affecting me and I decided to do something about it. In the back of my mind I thought that these hair loss treatments you see on advertisements on the tube were scams, but I had nothing to lose (except more hair!) so I decided to give it a try. If you are reading this and connect with my experience, there is hope! Initially I didn’t know where to begin, I was too embarrassed to go to my GP or to talk to any of my friends about it. I looked online but became overwhelmed with the different sites and products and reviews, some of these options were really expensive too so I didn’t want to get it wrong. Luckily, a friend of mine suggested a company called Manual (hair loss remedy). She said that a colleague of hers had raved about Manual and achieved great results. This was the only positive review I had come across from a trusted source so I was sold! You might be sceptical, I was too, but I am sharing this with you because it really worked!

So here’s the nitty gritty. Manual is a UK based ‘men’s health’ company offering a complete hair loss plan (this is what I went for), they also provide individual treatments for hair loss. Everything is arranged discreetly via their website, you choose your plan/products and it arrives through your letterbox. The plan includes three steps or products. Step 1 is an oral pill to be taken daily. The pill is called finasteride and it works by blocking the production of the DHT hormone which is the main cause of male pattern baldness. The stuff is clinically proven to stop hair loss in 9/10 men. Step 2 involves a spray/topical treatment which you spray on the scalp twice daily. This spray is called minoxidil and it works by increasing blood flow that stimulates hair follicles. Finally, we have step 3 which is the power shampoo. This step is optional but I was in for a penny, in for a pound and open to trying everything I could! The shampoo is packed with caffeine which again, is supposed to stimulate hair growth as well as strengthen and repair existing hair. For the complete plan you pay £60 for your first 3 month order (which works out to £20 a month) or monthly at £28 (which is what I did).

I’m telling you that these products work! And if you don’t believe me check out the reviews online. As you can see from the pictures my hair had grown back considerably after about five months of using the products above. I don’t know if it was an individual product that did the trick or the combination of products but it worked like magic! Manual state the likelihood for success with this plan is over 90% so if it works for me it should work for you too.#

This hair loss plan has truly changed my life. As I said above, it may sound pathetic and vain to some of you but I became so insecure about my hair that I avoided social gatherings, my confidence was knocked and I didn’t feel like myself. Since finding a solution that works, I feel like myself again, I am confident, happy and have a full head of hair!
